Ted Desmond is terribly afraid of mothers-in-law, seeing the havoc they have wreaked on many of his friends’ marriages. So he is determined to get to know his girlfriend Peggy’s mother before they become officially engaged. Contrary to Ted’s fears, Joan is utterly charming – but she is nevertheless convinced that her daughter and Ted, who is 20 years Peggy’s senior, aren’t well suited. With wit and ingenuity she goes about proving to both of them the error of their ways.
